This week we have been talking about class divided and surviving - TopicsExpress

This week we have been talking about class divided and surviving in todays schools in Nietos chapter one. In one aspect we focused on racism and how that plays in the classroom when the children with blue eyes believed they were smarter then the brown eyes and vise verse. Well, in that specific scenario we can see how a teacher is able to persuade her students. In Nietos we see a problem with achievement gap focused on minority groups because they are also viewed as the brown eye child. The media that I found for this week, is Dr. Ronald Ferguson and his research about closing gaps in school. The focus on this research is all about closing the gaps using good teachers and their ability to teach and connect with her/his students in an individualize way, showing high expectations for the students, and focusing on how to help them rather than finding blame on who they are or where they came from. It is very interesting how throughout his research he was able to take the same students from different backgrounds to four different schools in a way to prove that is all about the teacher how they learn and what they learn. As a society we are used to blaming the social class and diversity for the gaps that we are constructing ourselves because of the high stakes that do not give teachers the opportunity to connect with her/his students. As a nation we are moving away from connecting with people around us and that is what is taking us to have lower achievement. Ferguson, R. (2014, April 15). Closing the Nations Racial Gap.
