This weekend, I attended a workshop where Kylar Broadus explained why name changes (a process that takes almost no time or money if you, for example, want to change your last name because of marriage) can end up costing a client hundreds of dollars for someone who is transgender. Not because the process costs more money: because the courts create unfair hurdles which result in additional attorney time.
