This weekend, I stopped by an Antique shop and was very surprised to find a WW2 era Child’s Toy from Greece . The Antique dealer had no idea what it was and didn’t recognize Hitler, Goering or Mussolini …guess he didnt read Greek or know who “Karagiozi” was:) . During the War , money was scarce but kids still needed toys so ,paper cut-out Puppets were an easy solution. And in this case ,they included the perfect “villains” . Since the 15th Century ,”Karagiozi” has been a fictional Puppet Character used in Shadow Theaters in both Greece and Turkey . Both countries argue over who created the character first johnsanidopoulos/2010/07/karagiozi-not-turkish-greek-ministry.html but I’m sure it spread through both countries when the Ottoman Turks occupied Greece. Heres an example of a typical Karagiozi show https://youtube/watch?v=3CPerzzvslM I know it’s not a “rare” item but ,still framed it and I doubt if many of these survived so ,I’m glad I found it. It’s a simple toy that still “tells a story”
