This weekend I was in Washington DC; in the Eastern Market area. There I met a Surinamese man, in the open market, selling wood carvings, the first one I ever met; and what a history lesson I received from him. I told him that my maternal grand-father visited Surinam and told us many stories of this visit and that I went to the border on the Guyana side and saw the country, but have not visited yet. He said that Surinam was colonized by people from Holland and Barbados. Among the very prominent Barbadians were the white Fosters, who stayed and eventually made families with the native Maroons. They have a very healthy regard for Barbadians as a result. He further told me that that is why there is a Surinam in Barbados. It is in St. Joseph. I wonder whether there is a relationship between the Fosters who went to Surinam and Foster Hall, in St. John? How did Surinam in St. Joseph get its name and why that location?
