This weekend I will be addressing about 160 staff of a rapidly growing financial institution on the subject of EXCELLENCE. One of the core tenets of my presentation is that when an employee is excellent, the ultimate beneficiary is not his employer but himself. Consider the success of former MTN Marketing guru George Andah. Most people dont know that Georges first degree is in biochemistry. But his obsession with marketing and his passion to excel have been the true keys to his success. George started work with Guinness and rose through the ranks to become Marketing Director. He had a strong drive to excel and that to the ordinary employee might have looked stupid. Why kill yourself? Is the company for your father? It appeared that he was helping his employer at his own expense. No! He was helping his own self better. He moved from Guinness to MTN and took his obsession a notch higher. He dyed his beard yellow, consistent with the MTN brand color. At one time, he sent Bola Ray who was MCing an MTN-sponsored event backstage to change his green trousers to yellow. Under him, the MTN zone was introduced and it increased the companys profit by 30%. He was stretching himself for the business. But more importantly, he was stretching his own potential. He excelled so much at his work that after just a year with MTN, he was awarded the Best Marketing practitioner at the 2008 CIMG Awards. Then the offers began to flow in. Airtel poached him to manage the brand in Nigeria. Then Glo had a go at him by making him their COO until he resigned later to start his consultancy business. His commitment to his work made him a sought-after commodity in the marketplace. When you pursue excellence in your field, the true beneficiary is not your employer, it is yourself. Keep shining!
