This weekend started the Rooster Roundup. Tagged pen raised - TopicsExpress

This weekend started the Rooster Roundup. Tagged pen raised pheasants were released in the counties of Ford Finney and Hodgeman, 150 in all. Each tag number has a prize assigned to it. Top prize as I see it, is a Mossberg shotgun. I assume this contest is to bring more pheasant hunter to these areas, ostensibly a good idea for local businesses. However for the local hunters it a bad idea, especially in a year like this with low bird populations. While populations are up this year they are up against the lowest populations in decades. There was almost nowhere to go but up. They have modeled this contest off of the one Winner SD runs. But Winner does it right, their top prize in a million dollars. Shoot the right tagged bird and win a million. Not many sportmen are going change plans or locations to win a Mossberg shotgun not even for a silver reserve model. Mossberg’s are commonly referred to as truck guns, serviceable but not really desirable. One notable deal about this contest is it will bring to light the survivability of pen raised pheasants. We will see hew many of these birds are killed late in the contest if any. Meantime our public lands will be pounded this weekend by the locals seeking these birds and our low population will take longer to recover.
