This weekend, we have Johnny Appleseeds Birthday going on. We will have a contest for the biggest and smallest apple (by weight) going on all weekend and special events from noon - 4pm both Saturday and Sunday. Events include balloon artists, face painting, Bessie picture coloring, bean bag toss and calliope music. Let the festivities begin! Of course, we will also have trailer rides going, cider and slushies, turnovers, cider donuts and caramel apples. The grill be be fired up from 11:30 - 2pm both days as well. And then theres all those great apples to pick: WHATS PICKIN: HONEYCRISP: still going strong. This years Honeys are big and beautiful. Crunch, juice and real apple heaven. SONG OF SEPTEMBER: this is a great time to pick SOS. They are nice and ripe and these cool nights have brought some extra color and flavor. Like Honeycrisp, the Song of September are big and proud this year. But they will not last long -- SOS is a variety that does not stay on the tree. JONATHAN: one of Americas great contribution to the field of appledom. Jons boast a rich apple flavor and are great for eating out of hand or any baking needs. They are also the parent to a ton of new varieties like Jonamac, Jonagold, etc. We have Jonathons available in our new dwarf tree plantings as well as in the older trees. ARLET (aka Swiss Gourmet): originally from Switzerland, Arlet is a cross between Ida Reds and Golden Delicious. Great taste, good for eating or baking. KANDIL SINAP: from Turkey, this variety is sweet, flavorful and gorgeous. Elongated fruit with a beautiful blush. This is the favorite apple of a number of long term customers at Wilsons. WOLF RIVER: a monster apple. Wolf Rivers can get to a pound per apple and make great pies or sauce. They were popular on homesteads around the Midwest. Check them out in our new dwarf tree plantings. SENSHU: from Japan, this variety has some of the same parentage as Fuji. Small fruit with great sweet flavor. Our trees are really sucking wind right now and will have to be replaced, but they have a good crop this year. Check them out while you can...
