This weekends gospel reading highlights John the Baptist and I was reminded of my song, A Voice Cries Out. Heres a little background on the song and on the recording. I wrote this piece in the late 1990s when I was working at St. Benedict. It is strongly influenced by the chord structures and pop rhythms of Chicago (especially their 80s albums), a group Ive loved since my high school days. The piece wasnt published until recently and it appears on my UNTO US collection. A word about the recording itself. It was done several years ago when I was assistant music director at St. Monica to be part of a parish holiday CD called PACEM. It features the harmony vocals of Deanna Light and Kim Johnston, whose names actually appear in the iTunes tags (so that if you search on their names in iTunes, the song comes up--cool!). Not sure how that happened along the way. Anyhoo, the publisher liked the recording and so we did not re-record it when it went on to be included on UNTO US. I like the guitar work by Dave Lichtenwalner and the 80s synths in the background, especially on the power bridge (though, if I re-recorded it today, I might go more organic with the instruments!). Christi, our choir director, always laughs when she listens because she says I sing A voice cries OW. Ha! Diction is important, folks. Happy Gaudete Sunday. Rejoice! The Lord is near!
