This weekend’s big release is probably the first huge release of the year as it ends a highly successful franchise. That’s right, TAKEN 3 is hitting theatres tomorrow. The final chapter of the action trilogy finds Liam Neeson’s Brian Mills on the run after being framed for a murder most foul. The film finds Taken 2 director Olivier Megaton returning with writers Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen to end the franchise they started back in 2009. So how about we do a little retrospective. In January of 2009 the first Taken film was released. The film was hardly a hit with the critics who were decidedly mixed over the film. It still managed to turn a huge profit, become a major success for Fox and make Liam Neeson an action hero over night. So what logically happened?… a sequel. In 2012 Neeson and co. returned to the big screen with a sequel that wasn’t quite as fresh as the original but to this critic still managed to be fun and entertaining. Its reception was decidedly more mixed then its predecessor but it still managed to be an enormous hit. Which is why now, even though Besson didn’t think it could happen, we have a third and FINAL Taken film. Neeson himself stated that he wouldn’t star in the film if anyone was taken and Besson and Kamen wanted to take the film in a different direction. The reaction to the film so far, although I’m sure more reviews will come in, has been far more negative then the first two films. That being said, the series has always been successful and with plenty of fans awaiting this final chapter I can almost safely say it will be a success. Will it take down The Hobbit from number 1? I don’t know but it stands a good chance. https://youtube/watch?v=JuU0M2xBasc
