This weeks Army Aviation picture is a video. In 2007 a Chinook was making a two wheel landing on to a steep slope in a remote mountain valley in Guatemala. The aft rotor blades scraped into the hill side and the pilots made an emergency landing into the bottom of the ravine on the bank of a stream bed. Although all three rotor blades were damaged, the landing was made safely with all crew and passengers ok. The maintenance guys determined that the aircraft could not be flown out so it was rigged for extraction as an external load. The aircraft was lifted out of the mountains and flown to a nearby airport where a C-17 picked it up and evacuated it back to the US. I added some extra photos as well on the campaign website dancramerforcongress/guatemala.html
