This weeks Curators Corner: Many people visiting the Lincolns would leave their hats on the hat rack in the front hall. The hat rack remained in use until late January 1861, when Dr. Newton Bateman was offered a choice of furnishings from the Lincoln Home. Dr. Bateman was State Superintendent of Public Instruction and had an office just down from the Lincoln-Herndon office. He selected the hat rack and a hall chair which remained in his family until 1950 (hat rack) and 2005 (hall chair) when his descendants returned them.
