This weeks Heres to your Health - Chewing Gum May Ease Stress Chewing sugarless gum may help reduce stress, according to a new study. Participants were given math problems to solve for thirty minutes to increase their level of stress. Afterward, they either were told to rest or were given gum to chew for varying lengths of time. Researchers analyzed saliva samples from both groups before the math computations and at intervals afterwards to measure the amount of the stress hormone cortisol. Results showed that chewing gum for 10-15 minutes was linked to a significant reduction in cortisol levels. Experts caution that excessive gum chewing may lead to headaches and jaw problems.
