This weeks #MedicalManners question: Whats the proper response when you disclose an illness only to be met with rudeness? Let me know your advice below. Thanks. I have been diagnosed with a chronic, auto-immune disease – Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – for a number of years now. I think I live with my MS pretty well. After moving to a new city, however, I’m finding myself having to “introduce” myself and my disease all over again. It surprises me the number of people who react in very odd and sometimes hurtful ways – “at least it’s not cancer” or “oh, my [fill in the blank relation] died from that!” or with that look of shock, pity, concern, questioning my truthfulness. I guess I’m wondering how to react to someone’s rude, disrespectful or just plain mean response to me and my disease. It’s not like I can take my revelation back; I only tell people who I feel should know. What is the proper rejoinder to such painful retort?
