This weeks Philly Classic is from my favorite all time favorite artist The 4 Tops & its not on Motown & its not from the 60s. Its the ORIGINAL version of I Believe In You And Me released in the Summer of 1982 as a B-Side to Sad Hearts which only reached #84 on the Hot 100. I Believe In You And Me received massive airplay in Philly but never charted nationally. It didnt even make the Soul Singles chart. In 1983 Marilyn McCoo released a duet cover version with Billy Davis Jr. as a single from her Solid Gold album that never charted & Whitney took it to #4 in 1997 after a December 1996 release. Levi Stubbs pours his heart out & his strong vocals make you believe every word hes singing. Many people thought this was Larry Graham as they have a similar sound. Despite the bigger success of the Whitney Houston version, the songs co-composer David Wolfert, stated in a 2001 interview that young songwriters, referring to the song, told him: Oh, you wrote that Whitney song. He claimed, I say, Thats not really a Whitney song, and play them the (Four Tops) original. Their mouths drop open. No one is going to sing that song like Levi-ever. Next on Philly Phriday: Its not polite to STAIR!
