This weeks #WildWednesday takes us to sunny Florida, where we can beat our winter blues by watching lemurs from the Lemur Conservation Foundation explore the tree canopy! Lemurs are a type of prosimian primate found on the island of Madagascar. Many people are familiar with the Ring-tailed Lemur through various pop culture references, but there are over 90 species of lemurs, many of which are in need of conservation actions. Loss of forest habitat, brush fires, unregulated hunting, and illegal collection for the pet trade are some causes for population decline. What can you do to help? Even though these animals can be cute and are very cool, they should never be considered as a pet. You can also support field conservation efforts ranging from direct land protection, to creating alternative sustainable livelihoods for native human residents. More information can be found online including LCF (lemurreserve.org/index.html) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (wcs.org/where-we-work/africa/madagascar.aspx?gclid=CNi6ppXMpcMCFQsDaQodzbMACA)
