This weeks album of the week is Gajeks debut LP on the Berlin institution MONKEYTOWN RECORDS (OFFICIAL SITE) entitled Restless Shapes. link.bleep/gajek-restless-shapes Having recently collaborated with Warps Clark, Gajek presents his debut album on the Berlin institution Monkeytown. Restless Shapes is a concept album of sorts based around three movements: Curved Engines Restless Water Shapes & Moving Glasses the Curved Engines phase starts things off with an array of complex, rhythmic structures combining classical elements bent into a techno structure. The results as heard on Curved Engines Pt. 01 compare somewhat to the head-spinning early work of Clark (Clarence Park era) but composed on stringed instruments. The middle section of the LP is devoted to Restless Water Shapes kicking off with Restless Water Shapes Pt. 01. Track titles aside, this is some truly emotive electronic music, beautifully crafted and sleek like a robotic panther, from hyper-extended SND rhythm & sound to bass-heavy aquatic adventures found in the searching Restless Water Shapes Pt. 03. The third and final movements flow with the 80s slap-bass wizardry of Moving Glasses Pt. 01 with its thrashing drum machines, each movement underpinned by what could be a clock ticking as we draw towards the end of the LP. 21 tracks perfect for headphone commutes and quiet Autumn evenings.
