This weeks featured #seaNJ #seaNY creature: the longfin inshore squid The longfin inshore squid is a popular stock off NY and NJ (especially in the Barnegat Bay area!) and they are found predominately in the waters of the continental shelf and slope. The life cycle of a longfin inshore squid is less than one year. Although longfin inshore squids spawn year-round (and a female can lay up to 16,000 eggs in her lifetime!), squid hatched in the summertime grow quickest due to the warmer water temperature. Longfin inshore squid can control their color, which ranges from deep red to light pink. Check out this cool experiment on how squid skin color changes in response to music: blog.mbl.edu/?p=2005 As longfin inshore squid grow, their diet changes in tandem. Young squid eat mainly plankton and larger squid eat crustaceans and small fish – including other squid! Photos courtesy of Laptew Productions and wired
