This weeks readings are Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19, Isaiah 54:1-10, and Luke 23:1-25. The Deuteronomy reading is a unique section of the Torah. It focuses on one topic and addresses the topic by example, without mentioning the word, which is “KINDNESS”. Kindness is appropriate in every situation of life, and is an essential requirement before reaching the heights of “love”. This portion details many examples of kindness. One must first be kind before loving another person. This is a very important teaching if we are to keep the first and second Greatest Commandments: (1) loving GOD, and (2) loving our neighbours. In Matthew 5, Yshua (Jesus) speaks about the blessings for those who teach even the LEAST of the Commandments ... did you know one of the least of the Commandments is mentioned in the Deuteronomy reading? It is Deuteronomy 22:6-7 -- the instructions regarding KINDNESS to a mother bird. Amazingly, the reward for keeping this Commandment is very similar to the reward of honouring your parents: that your days may be prolonged (Deuteronomy 5:16). The Torah is our FATHERs Instructions to us -- HIS Teaching and Ways. It is also a revelation of WHO He is and what He is LIKE (His Nature/Character) ... Think about this!! We serve the GOD of the Universe, Creator of ALL ... Who cares about the emotions/heart of the little mother bird ... How much MORE then does He care for YOU?! This is similar to what Yshua (Jesus) tells us in Matthew 6:25-34 and 10:29-31, as well as Luke 12:22-31. As you read through the Commandments given in this portion, considering how they are a revelation of ABBA FATHER -- of His Heart ... and then think of how He wants US to be and act ... Lets think about how can we implement these Commandments in our walk TODAY ...
