This weeks theme is Norma Jeane - The Jim Dougherty Years - 1942-1946 1943 - Catalina Jim trained recruits of the Merchant Marines to prepare them physically for what they may face in the South Pacific. Jim, being a permanent member, was allowed to bring his wife, whereas recruits were not allowed to bring their wives to Catalina. Jim and Norma Jeane moved to Catalina in September of 1943. Jim moved with his wife and newly rescued stray collie, Muggsy, to an apartment that cost them half of Jims salary. Jim took up scuba diving and would frequently bring back lobster and other seafood for Norma Jeane and their new friends, Mr. and Mrs. White and Mr. and Mrs. Gaddis, to enjoy. Jim was chosen to be the godfather of James Edward Gaddis. During this time, Jim and Norma Jeane became closer than ever, but cracks soon appeared in their relationship. At 17, Norma Jeane started to become restless as a housewife and questioned Jims dominate and controlling personality traits. Jim frequently questioned her clothing choices (tight sweaters and bikinis) and accused her of dressing provocatively to attract men. Norma Jeane claimed that she didnt wear them to seduce men, she wore them to show her charms but in an innocent way. Norma Jeane, always ahead of her time, started to lift weights and exercise vigorously thanks to advice from Mr. Howard Carrington, a military instructor and Olympic dumbbell champion. I have attached pictures of Norma Jeane and Jim with the Gaddis family, Jim posing with some recruits, and a picture of Muggsy with a small child (Im thinking Jims nephew but I cant say for sure). Happy weekend everyone!!!!
