This week’s collection highlight is a sculpture titled “Corporal Clinton Greaves,” by Ed Dwight. Corporal Greaves was a Buffalo Soldier who received the Medal of Honor on June 26, 1879, as a Corporal in Company C of the 9th Cavalry Regiment, for actions on January 24, 1877, in the Florida Mountains in New Mexico in the Indian Wars in the western United States. The citation reads, “While part of a small detachment to persuade a band of renegade Apache Indians to surrender, his group was surrounded. Corporal Greaves, in the center of the savage hand-to-hand fighting, managed to shoot and bash a gap through the swarming Apaches, permitting his companions to break free.” The sculpture was a seminal part of Ed Dwight Sculptor series Black Frontier in the American West, comprised of 50 bronzes depicting the contribution of African Americans to the opening of the West.
