This week’s meditation from Bishop Houck, Catholic Extension - TopicsExpress

This week’s meditation from Bishop Houck, Catholic Extension President Emeritus: In the group of cardinals made by Pope Francis, one was Cardinal Capovilla, a 98 year old archbishop who in his earlier days had been a private secretary to St. John XXIII. Interviewed by the media, he said he received the news of his appointment with “much serenity” and “in communion” with all “humble priests” who humbly and silently served their whole lives so that the joy of the gospel reaches out to all people. He is obviously a humble man with much serenity in his life and grateful for the opportunities he’s had to serve. He went on to say, “St. John XXIII taught me silence, hiddenness, humility and service given only out of love. He taught me that this is the summit of Christian behavior.” While we are not a 98 year old cardinal his advice and example can speak to all of us. St. Francis de Sales was so expert in teaching lay men and women that we are all called to be saints but we all do not use the same path to get there. It will help us to reflect on our own lives whatever responsibilities we have in family, in work, and in our community. In the midst of modern American life with videos, TV and movies – almost constant noise – do our best to make more time for those four items St. John XXIII taught the cardinal: “silence, hiddenness, humility and service given only out of love”.
