This week’s nomination to the Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame is Comber man Roy Beck. For many years Roy was an active member of the North End Ards Supporters Club. On match days at Castlereagh Park, Roy would man the car park before moving inside the ground to help with the half time ballot. When Ards were away Roy helped run the North End Supporters bus, and he also attended Castlereagh Park on Sunday mornings to help organise and collect money at their successful car boot sale. When the North End Club disbanded many of the members threw their lot in with Ards Rangers, and the car boot sale moved with them. Ards FC’s loss was very much Ards Rangers gain, and over the years Roy and his colleagues have helped with many fundraising ventures that have been of huge benefit to the Drome Park club. Roy’s hard work does not stop at the end of the football season, as his other big sporting passion is North Down Cricket Club. Roy is a regular at all NDCC games, home & away, though when Ards Rangers & North Down games overlap Roy has been known to leave the cricket for a couple of hours to watch Ards Rangers before returning to see the end of the match. At every North Down game Roy does a lap of The Green collecting donations to NDCC from spectators. Roy has never sought recognition for his fundraising efforts, but he is always willing to do what he can to help. Roy has made a significant contribution to Ards FC, Ards Rangers & North Down Cricket Club over the years and thoroughly deserves to his place in the Sporting Snippets Hall of Fame.
