This week’s theme on d365 is “Called to Follow.” The decision to follow can be costly. It requires trust. Sometimes we are led to places we don’t know or would rather not go. Katie Day reminds us that who we follow matters, because when God is leading the way, we are never alone. Thursday October 30, 2014 PAUSE... “Where you go, Ill go; Where you stay, Ill stay; When you move, Ill move; I will follow you. Who you love, Ill love; How you serve, Ill serve; If this life I lose, I will follow you.” youtu.be/1ohvhmGSfxI Chris Tomlin This is the essence of what it means to be a disciple. Disciples are students; they follow their teacher and their teacher’s teaching. In a culture where independence is prized above all else, it’s easy to believe that being a follower is a bad thing. Truthfully? It all depends on who you choose to follow. LISTEN... Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. Matthew 23:1-3 THINK... It seems like every week brings news of another fall from grace, someone who messed up big time and got caught, someone whose actions didn’t match up with their words, like a preacher who had an affair, an accountant caught embezzling money, or a police officer who abused their power and broke the law. Jesus had a lot to say about those kinds of folks. He teaches his disciples to live an authentic life, to practice what they preach. He wants his disciples to seek out teachers who do the same, whose words and actions match up. We all know those people who say one thing and do another. Don’t spend your time on them, trying to understand what they really are about. Instead, seek out authentic people, and do your best to be authentic as well, following Jesus’ example of letting your actions speak just as loud as your words. Katie Day PRAY... Jesus, thank you for being honest and open, and for letting me see who you are by your words and your actions. Give me the courage and the strength to be consistent as well, and surround me with people who are trying to do the same. Amen. GO... An ancient Jewish saying goes like this: “May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi.” It was meant as encouragement to be a good disciple: follow your rabbi, your teacher, so closely that you get dusty from the dirt he kicks up as he walks. Follow not only what he teaches but also where he goes and what he does. May you, today, respond to God’s call to follow. May you be covered in the dust of the Rabbi. Los discípulos son los estudiantes; que siguen a su maestro y la enseñanza de su maestro. En una cultura donde la independencia es apreciado por encima de todo, es fácil creer que ser un seguidor es una mala cosa. A decir verdad? Todo depende de que usted elija seguir. ESCUCHAR ... Entonces Jesús dijo a la multitud ya sus discípulos: Los escribas y los fariseos se sientan en la cátedra de Moisés; por lo tanto, hacer lo que te enseñan y lo siguen; pero no hacen lo que hacen, porque ellos no practican lo que enseñan. Mateo 23: 1-3 PENSAR ... Parece que cada semana trae noticias de otra caída en desgracia, alguien que en mal estado a lo grande y quedó atrapado, alguien cuyas acciones no coincidía con sus palabras, como un predicador que tuvo un romance, un contador capturado malversación de dinero, o un oficial de policía que abusó de su poder y violó la ley. Jesús tuvo mucho que decir acerca de ese tipo de gente. Él enseña a sus discípulos a vivir una vida auténtica, para practicar lo que predican. Él quiere que sus discípulos a buscar a los maestros que hacen lo mismo, cuyas palabras y acciones coincidir. Todos sabemos que las personas que dicen una cosa y hacen otra. No gaste su tiempo en ellos, tratando de entender lo que realmente son aproximadamente. En su lugar, buscar a las personas auténticas, y hacer su mejor esfuerzo para ser auténtico y, siguiendo el ejemplo de dejar que sus acciones hablan tan fuerte como las palabras de Jesús. Día Katie ORAR ... Jesús, gracias por ser honesto y abierto, y por dejarme ver lo que eres por tus palabras y tus acciones. Dame el valor y la fuerza para ser consistente, así, y rodearme con personas que están tratando de hacer lo mismo. Amén. GO ... Un antiguo proverbio judío dice así: Que seas cubierto en el polvo de su rabino. Se entiende como estímulo para ser un buen discípulo: seguir su rabino, su maestro, tan de cerca que se obtiene polvo de la suciedad que se empiece a levantar mientras camina. Siga no sólo lo que enseña, sino también a dónde va y lo que hace. Que, en la actualidad, responder a la llamada de Dios a seguir.
