This whole Ray Rice incident has everyone up in arms. Once upon a time I was also in an abusive relationship. My first bad boy at the age of 21. When I got pregnant he was so excited, and I was terrified. The relationship started to get weird when we moved into together after I got put on bed rest. It started out with just lying and drama. It moved to verbal and some physical abuse, and the complete isolation from friends and family. There are definitely somethings I still remember but for the most part my time with him is a blur. I was in constant survival mode, just trying to make sure my kids and I stayed alive. I have to thank my Grandma and Oprah Winfrey for unknowingly opening my eyes. I saw my 4 year old daughter and my 1 year old son and thought, I don’t want them to think this is what love is. The cycle ended there. When I decided to be free, he destroyed all of my belongings. He cut up all my clothes and all the cords to my computer. The locks were changed and he went to jail. No longer was I going to listen to, just keep it in the family, because that family wasn’t helping me, just him. When I was free, it was my reawakening into my former confident self. Now a single mother not just any man was going to be in my life. There were a few suitors but only one prevailed, to be able to meet my kids. My now husband Kolawolé Marville Sr. who adopted those kids and loves them just as his own. Our love for each other is one that is unending. We build each other up, cheer each other on, and never bring each other down. I left because I deserved a better life no matter what “he” said, someone out there does love me just the way I am. #whyileft
