This will be lengthy, but people have asked, so here it is. A recap and the latest about whats going on with the One-Year-Adventure... The year began on the first day of fall 2013 and it ends this Sunday, the last day of summer, 9-21-14. Its all about raising donations for, Change4Diabetes.org, to help find a Practical Cure for Juvenile Diabetes (Type-1). Ive had this disease for 32 years and it’s a HUGE, HUGE pain in the blank!!! To bring attention of the cause, I set out to hike the Manitou Incline as many times as I could in one year, but the Incline closed for repairs after 330 days. Before closing, I completed 1,400 ascents, enough to set a new world record for the number of vertical feet climbed in a year. IMO, Roger Austin was the previous world record holder, but it is officially held by a Canadian who ascended 1 million vertical feet and skied down the same. After the Incline closed, 35 days remained before my one year event ended. I added to the number of vertical feet ascended by making daily hikes/runs up Barr Trail. Most of the time, I stopped at the Experimental Forest sign which is just over 3 miles up the trail, and roughly 2,200 vertical feet higher than where I park. Steve Stermer, Joseph Monger and I hiked to Barr Camp once (their first time there) and Steve and I hiked to the top of Pikes Peak and back the following week. As the end neared, I decided to attempt, The Pikes Peak 8’em-Up-Challenge! Yes, I gave it the name!! The event is 8-ascents (round-trips) of Pikes Peak via Barr Trail in 8 consecutive days...and you must eat a doughnut at the top after each ascent so you can truly say that you...Ate-Em-Up!! I began last Sunday and today I made the 6th round-trip of Pikes Peak via Barr Trail in 6 consecutive days. I admit…I’m hurting! Since the adventure started nearly a year ago, this is my 363rd day with no days off and I’ve ascended somewhere between 2.5 and 3 million vertical feet (one way)…it will take a while to figure it all out. Ugh!!...the weather is looking questionable for this Sunday!! On Monday, I’m hoping to sleep all day as I’ve arranged for the day off from work!! And NO exercise, I promise!! So two days remain to finish the year and the Pikes Peak 8em Up Challenge. We’ll see how it goes…
