This wooden shanty was constructed by the Seaboard Air Line - TopicsExpress

This wooden shanty was constructed by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and sits along the now abandoned (in 1987) CSX Norlina Subdivision at Dewitt, Virginia approximately 20 miles southwest of Petersburg. More specifically this was once the location the South End Dewitt interlocking which was the south end of a passing siding. The tiny structure is perched above U.S. Route 1 and would be nearly impossible to see when foliage is on the trees. Former engineer Doug Riddell, who operated trains for both the SCL and Amtrak over this route, shared with me that during derailments or signal suspensions, an operator could occupy a shanty such as this, so they could and did sometimes serve as temporary block stations.
