This writer finds the article appearing in this days Newsday FDNY Lawsuit settled disturbing. The article reports that the new administration has dropped the lawsuit seeking to block a law allowing suits against individual cops for racial profiling. The stop, question , frisk policy was executed in locations which can only be described as war zones. The people shot in these areas are 90% people of color. The shooters are reported as being people of color. This policy although an unpleasant one for the good guys is responsible for getting the number of body bags going under the ground from over 2000+ a year to an outstanding low of around 400. That means 1600 people of color who would be under the ground are on top of the ground--alive and well. I spent time in the Bronx in the late 60s and all of the 70s. In certain areas it was was like living in Lebanon. In one parish Our Lady of Angles parishioners feared leaving their apartments to attend daily mass. A priest would bring Holy Communion to them in the lobbies of their buildings.. When I was invited to appear on Good Morning America [1976] with David Hartman to explain our work with the Senior Citizens Defense League which I founded the producer of the show asked who I was bring along. When I told her that we were bring the priest from Our Lady of Angles to tell his story she asked me to leave him behind. This I refused to do. She cancelled our appearance. She told us we could not go on live national television and tell the world our story. I found out later from another producer that the reason was fear of the effect of such a fact would have on tourism. Mayor Giuliani --Jack Maple- Bill Bratton-Mayor Bloomberg -Commissioner Kelly and an outstanding NYCPD turned things around and made our city the safest city in the whole world. If our cops have to fear law suits in the performance of their duties then they will return to the old ways. The John Lindley ways- the ways that gave us a murder rate of 2000+ They will no longer be pro- active. They will be re- active. Under DE BAZIO AND THE CURRENT CITY COUNCIL-- THE CITY WILL DIE. I would not be surprised to see Bill Bratton taking a walk once he sees the murder rate start to clime up again. But most of all I feel bad for my brothers and sisters in those war zone percents as they get gunned down as they go out at night to buy a loaf of bread.
