This year, I have asked my advanced students to research some concert pianists. This is the latest installment. Thank you to Mavis for all the info on Martha Argerich. MARTHA ARGERICH Argerich brings to bear qualities that are seldom contained in one person: she is a pianist of brainteasing technical agility; she is a charismatic woman with an enigmatic reputation; she is an unaffected interpreter whose native language is music. (Alex Ross, the New Yorker) Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1941. She started piano lessons with Vizenzo Scaramuzza at the age of five, but she didnt like to practice - she read books instead, hidden in her lap. In 1955 she moved with her family to Europe. She studied with Friedrich Gulda in Vienna, Austria. Some of her other teachers included Maria Curcio, Stefan Askenase, and Nikita Magaloff. She was also taught by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli for a brief while. In 1957, when Argerich was 16, she won two piano competitions in rapid succession: one in Bolzano, the other in Geneva. She began to play in more and more concerts. Then, in 1965 - at the age of 24 - she won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Soon after she debuted in the U.S.A, playing in the Lincoln Centers Great Performers Series. She made her first recording the same year. Argerich began focusing more on concertos, chamber music and other collaberative work later in her career. Among others, she has played with cellist Mischa Maisky, the Berlin Philharmonic, and various pianists in duets and trios. Shes widely recognized as one of the greatest pianists of her time. ------- youtube/watch?v=KCSEwfqs-VM
