This year, I will have more magazines coming in the mail than ever - TopicsExpress

This year, I will have more magazines coming in the mail than ever before, and Im pretty happy about it. The bulk of them are the sort of magazines I always promised myself I would subscribe to, but they werent easily obtainable when I was a teen. Now they are easy as pie to order, thanks to Amazon magazine subscription services, and so I will have the following coming to me within a couple of months: Ellery Queens Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcocks Mystery Magazine, Analog, Asimovs, and of course Fantasy & Science Fiction. I have subscribed to the last of those for a number of years now, and I have submitted short stories (with no success) to each of the last three on the list. This year, I hope to make a sustained effort, writing lots of fiction and submitting it too, and it occurred to me that reading the magazines where I want my work placed PROBABLY makes sense. That will let me enjoy writing from others in the genres that interest me (science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, in case the magazine titles didnt give it away), and it will show me what sort of thing editors are buying at each of the various publications. Ive been doing a lot of reading lately, as some of you will have noticed, and this is a good way to ensure that I have plenty more to enjoy throughout the year, even if some months find me without resources to buy new books and the local library doesnt have what I want. I also get to support and enjoy some long-time publications that for all I know may not be around in a few years, or may stop offering physical editions, and that appeals to another side of me. All in all, Im quite pleased. And of course, Ill be sure to tell you all if the unthinkable happens and one of the above magazines does eventually include stories by me. A guy can dream, right?
