This year, as we mark sixty years of the Freedom Charter, we must - TopicsExpress

This year, as we mark sixty years of the Freedom Charter, we must display the political maturity necessary for us to ask ourselves difficult and uncomfortable questions that the ordinary masses ask daily in the normal course of their lives. We must robustly assess the impact of all our tactics in relation to our strategic objectives; this in order to guard that what begins as a proverbial tactical detour does not assume permanence and become a strategic off-ramp. We ought to ask ourselves whether the stranglehold of our countrys constitution on our national discourse and the movements decision making processes, arising from the 1994 compromises, can truly be justified in terms of the strategic objectives of our revolution; especially as we have entered the second phase of our long drawn transition from apartheid colonialism to the National Democratic Society. In simple terms, we must be able to answer whether it makes any political and/or economic sense for our government to spend billions of rands buying land from already rich white people whose ill-gotten wealth is a source of untold suffering for the landless millions of our people, especially the African majority. We have a responsibility to the people of South Africa as a whole to implement the Freedom Charter to the letter in order to create a society envisaged by our forebears in which there shall be no poverty, unemployment, inequality and all other avoidable social ills. We must be bold enough to assert the moral superiority of the Freedom Charter and therefore align our countrys constitution to all its clauses, particularly on economic and land questions. We must probe the possibility that our countrys constitution in its current form has reached its sell by date if indeed its basis was the consolidation of a democratic order. We must ask ourselves why it is that this constitution has found its most fervent defenders in the liberal corners of our political landscape and from forces whose class interests are similar to those of our former oppressors. As has been said before, the enemy maneuvers, but it remains the enemy. We must never be victims of our own successes! #DefendersOfTheFreedomCharter #BoSiyayNyova
