This year is the first year that we are far enough separated from the trauma of Vaughns medical past that we actually forgot about it. July 14, 2010, Vaughn underwent his fourth, most invasive, dangerous heart surgery. It was meant to be 7 hours, open heart, complete reconstruction of his left ventricle, closing of two holes, removal of excess tissue, and switch of a major blood vessel. After many complications, faced with signing a waiver to use experimental life-saving medication, and 12 hours later, we got to see our little 8 month boy again. Fast forward 4 years, today there is almost no daily reminder of what happened. The boy has some stellar scars! He is absolute best case scenario, a totally normal and abundantly happy kid. Thank you to Phoenix Childrens Hospital, to the cardiac PICU, and to cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Jeffry Pearl. You gave us the gift of our son, and you are in our hearts every single day.
