This year was one of the most important in my life. This year, I witnessed, firsthand, history unfold before my eyes. Marriage equality came to North Carolina in one of the most momentous ways. I was there as same-gender couples in Mecklenburg County exchanged their legal vows for the first time. But, personally, Ill remember this year most as one of loss. My dearest grandfather, Wilson Morrell Comer, passed on July 9. He was among the most formative influences in my life, teaching me the values upon which Ive built my career and passions. As a new year dawns, I hope my life continues to reflect the traditions and values he taught me simply by living his life as a role model and father figure to the young boy I once was.
