This year we would like to make it the best Big Butterfly Count - TopicsExpress

This year we would like to make it the best Big Butterfly Count ever in Wales by getting over 1000 people to take part. 2012 was the worst year on record for UK butterflies. As a result we expect numbers of butterflies to be lower this summer, but in the recent fine weather plenty of common butterflies are emerging. Can butterflies recover from the deluge of 2012 will be the big question for Big Butterfly Count 2013. What do you do? The Big Butterfly Count consists of a simple survey in which you count how many of each different type of butterfly that you see during a 15 minute period. The focus is on 21 common and widespread species (19 butterflies and 2 day-flying moths). The count can be done anywhere where you might see butterflies, from your garden, school grounds or nearby park, to fields and woods. Participants can carry out as many counts as they wish. All counts are important and should be submitted, even if no butterflies are seen. In 2013, the count will officially run for three weeks from Saturday 20 July to Sunday 11 August. However, the website is already open and will remain open until 31 August, so people can actually participate throughout the two months. There will be a media launch, with Sir David Attenborough and Joanna Lumley at the London Wetland Centre on Thursday18 July. Sightings can only be submitted online, either via the website bigbutterflycount.org or via a new Big Butterfly Count smartphone app. (see website).
