This young Wood duck needed assistance late last night when he was hit by a vehicle. A kind hearted person picked him up when he was walking his dog and noticed the duck was in trouble so removed him from the roadside and took him home to safety. The poor duck is suffering massive concussion and head trauma although thankfully, no broken bones. His balance is very ordinary at the moment and is basically sitting and sleeping most of the times which is normal for head trauma and concussion. One eye is totally closed and that side is swollen compared to the other so the main impact was obviously to that side. A long way to go yet before recovery but making it through the night is a good start and hes what I would consider stable at the moment in his condition. Thousands and thousands of our native critters die through collisions with vehicles on our roads each year and countless are injured. We understand that sometimes collisions with critters are unavoidable but if you do hit something, see someone else hit something or notice a critter injured on a roadside, please stop to help and call. The difference for these critters if someone just takes the time to stop and help can be the difference of life and death for them. And do not be afraid to use your horn!! It really is an effective way to get critters to move out of the way, as well as slowing down of course. Remember, we are on call 24/7 and will always go out, even during the night, to help a critter in need.
