Thoroughly enjoying Natalie Hinderass dbl-CD Piano Music by African American Composers, which I picked up for $2 through a Friends of the Library sale awhile ago. A native Ohioan whose great-grandparents were slaves, Hinderas was born Natalie Leota Henderson but coerced to changing her name by the racist world of classical music (by her teacher, Olga Samaroff, born Olga Hickenlooper, Stokowskis ex-wife....). With her mothers great help, Hinderas later become a pioneer of a black is beautiful undercurrent in the contemporary music world that included program with compositions by a small but various pool of Black composers (which caused a controversy in the press when the recorded repertoire was first released in 1971). Sadly, Hinderas passed away from cancer in 1987. Highlights on this disc include the cool meditations of (Jimmy Chambers brother) Talib Rasul Hakim (who was introduced to Sufism thru Ornette Coleman! / Also died young in 1988/ Check out his timeless MLK commission Birmingham Reflections ), and the Hale Smith dodecaphonic Evocation (1965). (Incidentally, I paid less than $30 for the classic 70s nine-LP CBS Records Black Composers Series, worth every penny so get yrs before they become collectible.) https://vimeo/71371238
