Those are the Rules of the Game. *********** ADDED TIME: Today, as the Battle for Zimbabwe awaits us, I will talk about a simple rule which last time made local social headlines, added time. In simplest terms the Ref is, among other things, a time keeper. He should make sure the game is played a good 90 minutes. Played here means when the ball is in play. He makes sure then that all the time the ball is out for throw ins, goal kicks, coner kicks or when celebrating a goal is accounted back into the 90 minutes. He does this without necessarily having to record the time or stopping his watch, he uses his common sense such that in situations where there are no ball boys and there are fewer balls and players hit the ball onto the terraces with fans taking time to return the ball more added time is needed. The instances where the ref has to stop his watch are subs, injuries which needs medics and other disturbances like missiling, pitch invasion by fans, bees or cats etc and also confrontation amongst players. Where possible the ref show this by raising his watch. The Ref if you watch him closely IS THE ONE who indicates added time to the fourth official whose duty is to raise the board. The added time tries to top up the already played time to make it a whole 90, so if any stoppage happens in added time the added time also freezes and start ticking when play resumes which will prolong the duration from when the added time started. In Africa, losely speaking, more than 50% of the games should have added time in added time looking at the way we employ delaying tactics. The gist of it all is that at the end of the day the fans should have watched 90 mins of action regardles of what daytime the game started and ended.
