Those fighting your husband will fail – Those were the words of Enugu cleric, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka to Mrs. Patience Jonathan sometime in November last year when the first lady happened to be among his congregation that day. Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka went ahead to call on Ndigbo to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential elections. He proclaimed that those fighting Jonathan would meet their down fall, saying that Greatness comes from God. The Roman Catholic Priest told the First Lady that APC posed no threat to her husband in Enugu, saying that people of the state view the opposition party as Boko Haram party. The latest news is that the cleric has now fallen out of love with the first family and has indeed turned against them urging Nigerians not to vote for Jonathan. Apparently, the cleric didnt get the expected gratification for his endorsement of the president as he expected. We obviously now have in our hands a situation of the church and mosque meddling in politics because this is not an isolated incident even though Mbaka is somewhat controversial as I remember his skirmishes with Governor Chamaroke Nnamani then whilst I was a youth corper in Enugu State. I dare say that it is not good for our polity for clerics to get embroiled in political endorsements. Its not their call as their duty is to win souls for their respective religions. The involvement of the religions in politics doesnt bode well for us being a multi-religious state. I certainly am not comfortable with clerics endorsing either of GEJ or GMB because in so doing they will get their hands soiled. They should stay away from politics, period. Both political camps are guilty of inviting this mixture of religion and politics with one of the presidential candidates fielding a pastor for the second time running to curry favour with christians who view him as an islamic bigot. “CHURCHES have a tremendous amount of power and a stupid amount of money,” complains David Silverman of American Atheists, a non-profit group. He thinks the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) should crack down harder on churches that meddle in politics. Under American law, churches that explicitly endorse or oppose a political candidate can lose their tax-exempt status. We need to enact similar laws to protect our clergymen/clerics from the corrupting influence of politicians. dailypost.ng/2014/11/09/fighting-husband-will-fail-enugu-cleric-tells-patience-jonathan/
