Those going to Bali, keep a watch out for dishonest service - TopicsExpress

Those going to Bali, keep a watch out for dishonest service providers! There are the good and honest people here, but my experience with Ken is that there seems to be many out here to cheat tourists of their money. In the few days we are here, it has happened at least three times -- two times with convenience store clerks who intentionally quoted us higher amounts for our purchases so as to pocket the extra cash (we managed to intercept by insisting on a receipt and a manual calculation of the items in the end), and a third time with a cab driver who knowingly told us to give him 400,000 rupiah for the ride when it should be 40,000 (we didnt discover this in time as we are new to the local currency). People who are dishonest do so usually because they are in a place of scarcity (not specific to their physical resources but in particular to their mental outlook), so I view this as just giving since the incident has already happened. However, do keep a watch out and prevent such incidents from happening by getting familiar with the local currency which has a lot of confusing zeroes (10,000 rupiah is about 1 USD), knowing the specific item costs, and always insisting on a receipt for every store transaction!
