Those of you who have read, The View from Delphi, remember Vida, the maid whom Johnny detests and conspires against. What you may not know is that Vida was based on a real person who worked in our house for a year when I was 5. After Delphi was published, I began to wonder how much of the animosity between the child and the maid was true to my past, and how much I imagined. 50 years after last seeing her, I had to occasion to visit her home, just to see if she remembered me. The first thing she said, was, Is that you, Johnny? I swear you were the worst boy I ever seen. Nope I didnt imagine it, She hated me as much as I hated her. She still hasnt forgiven me as you can tell in the photo.
