Those of you who know me know that I love kids. Babies, toddlers, 12 year-olds and everyone in between. Ive been in a great mood all day today, because my day started with a video shoot at UCCC (University City Childrens Center)--what a great place! My company was doing some volunteer work there, and I got to digitally document it for an upcoming United Way video that Im producing. Ordinarily, that would have been enough to make me happy. But today, as I was doing interviews and shooting B-roll, I was so drawn to the kids. And there was a personal reason for that. In terms of skin color, UCCC is a very diverse place. From dark to pale and all shades in between--this is a beautiful place. As Im soon to be a grandpa, I notice these things. I couldnt help but think of my own grandchild, whos just a few short months from joining us. As much as Id like to say that skin color doesnt matter, its unfortunate how much it still does in this world. I just got off the phone with my daughter, Audrey, and as we talked about it, she used the term mocha baby (I think she said it was Brents term first). Im sorry if that offends you, but I like it. Im glad that my grandchild will be neither black nor white. She will be loved and will always have a home. (And no, we dont know if shes a she--thats just me guessing.) All of this is to say this: while I am much too young to be a grandpa (or so I like to think), I am so looking forward to it. Im thrilled for Audrey and Brent, and I cant wait to meet and hold that new life!
