Those of you who know me, or who have been following my posts, will be aware that I am a strong proponent for free-range meat, eggs and poultry. Certainly I advocate treating the animals who give their lives to us for food ethically and respectfully. But theres more to it than that. There are a whole host of nutritional benefits to eating free range animals products compared to grain-fed factory-farmed animals. Grass fed dairy cows provide milk that is significantly higher in omega-3 fatty acids and has more beta-carotene than grain fed diary cows. Grass fed beef contains less saturated fat and more omega-3 fatty acids than grain fed beef. Free-range pig meat has about 60% more vitamin E than factory-farmed pig meat. Todays factory-farmed broiler chickens - the standard ones you buy at the supermarket - have up to one third less protein, one third more saturated fat and up to 50% more calories than an organic free-range chook that you might have bought in the 1970s. In fact, thinking is that to get the same amount of nutrients from chicken meat today you would need to feed your family four chickens compared to one free range organic chook from the 70s. Sheds a whole new light on the concept of being over-fed and under-nourished. Sure...free-range organic grass fed meat, poultry, eggs and dairy might cost more but you need less of it (smaller portions less frequently). And then...isnt you health worth it?
