Those of you who know me well are aware that my tastes in church - TopicsExpress

Those of you who know me well are aware that my tastes in church music run very much in the “high church” direction. Even so, during the past five years, as I’ve served in the music ministry at my present church, Woodlawn Baptist Church, where the music, though “mixed”, is more “low” than “high” church, I’ve gained a new appreciation for the low-church genre known as “contemporary Christian” music and, more precisely still, for the subgenre of “praise and worship” music, at least the praise and worship music that we do there. That music, for the most part, consists of the relatively well-known works of various “new hymn writers”, such as Keith Getty and Stuart Townend (e.g., “In Christ Alone”), and the lessor-known works of various cutting-edge “worship bands”, such as Sovereign Grace and Austin Stone, and it is almost all congregational, that is, its sung by the congregation as a whole, rather than by a choir, a praise band, an ensemble, or a soloist. Here’s a link to a YouTube recording of one of my favorites, which the congregation will sing this coming Sunday morning, called “Jesus Saves”. When, as will be the case this Sunday, I play bass in the band, it’s all I can do to keep my head while I play, so moving do I find the song, and this as much because of the lyrics as because of the music. (But I still do like my Chesnokov! :))
