Those pundits should stop wasting their breath, time and energy thinking of the personal issue existing between late President Kabbah and his SLPP party. I think I came to agree with veteran British Conservative Party politician, Norman Lamont, who once said and I quote: Gratitude is a rare commodity in politics; you cant expect much of it. It was a fitting analogy of the Thatcher-Major 2 former British Prime Ministers’ poor relationship; one that started so good at the beginning of someone’s long political journey. After that 2007 disputed presidential runner-off election which APC under Ernest Bai Koroma won, those SLPP heavyweights tried all in their power to hijack the shocking but nonetheless clean APC victory by way of introducing violence and intimidation which would have ensured the nullification of the poll thereby warranting a second rerun that would have seen them rigging that election hence imposing themselves against the rejected will of the people. A tall order indeed. Julius Caesar of ancient Rome was the greatest idealist that ever lived, yet never to become King despite his ruthless ambition one of insatiable lust for power and fame. The SLPP would have had their way not being for one major obstacle which was that of President Kabbah who was not prepared to be part of the unholy alliance, the awkward squad for that matter, hence deciding to overrule them by ordering the Sierra Leone Electoral Commission/Commissioner to announce the results effectively declaring an APC victory. That to them amounted to a grave act of betrayal, blaming President Kabbah’s reluctance that cost them the election and therefore power. Spare a thought if you think President Kabbah having done so much including staking everything to achieve a lasting peace for Sierra Leone and its people, would then turn again, doing something as naive as plunging the same Sierra Leone into a new this time deadlier phase of civil war all in the name of party loyalty. A difficult decision that was for him, he decided to sacrifice his partys love and confidence in him in pursuit of maintaining a peaceful stable Sierra Leone as it is today. I wont say with absolute certainty that all SLPP members hate the late President Kabbah rather minded to believe that the vast majority of them especially the key occupants of the high table, the ultimate movers and shakers for that matter, have an unforgiving issue with him, that which I have already explained. Make no mistake, SLPP are meticulous planners often not for the better or general good of their very party itself. Take the current example of quote and quote; the ‘Bios Paopa’ political death squad, an implacable crack unit operating within party as with its lawless membership going about targeting, taking revenge on any they suspect is against them. They need to pull back from the brink of self-destruction opting instead for a decent constructive politics ideal for a modern democracy. People’s choice and opinion are the two things that count most in any properly functioning democracy. Ignore that to your peril. Rest in peace Ex-President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. You will forever be missed by us patriotic Sierra Leoneans of nation first before politics. Great men and women don’t die. They merely disappear to forever remain in the minds of people, people whose lives they have made a positive difference on.
