Those who bat for hinduism being peaceful religion, religion can never be peaceful. Organised religion needs to be ruthless for its very existance. Very less religion has been so ruthless to its own people, as hinduism has been to its lower caste people. Just because it has to maintain the division as told in Vedas by God according to belief. The Buddist shrines and sanghas destroyed by hindus are countless. Remember, the words of Gita Pray in the form/way u want and it reaches to the same God was told when there was no Buddists or Abrahamic religion around. So, it hardly includes those. But being one of the oldest religions, hinduism certainly knew how to survive. It has seen Buddhism sweeping away its base badly. It converted Buddha as the incarnation of Vishnu for survival. It has seen Islam being imposed by the ruler. It even made hindu girls married to islamic rulers. Or resorted to sufisim. Kabir Das or very recently Sai Baba of Shirdi are the good examples how hinduism sustained with flavour of islam. Hinduism knew for sure if u want to survive long, dnt resort to violence. There is a proverb in Bengali those who withstand, survive. Thats so very true for religions. Assimilate change and others, and ud survive. Oppose and fight, and ud perish. Only if the thekedars of hinduism today knew an iota of history of hinduism.
