Those who complain about the dearth of good Filipino films better VOTE for this film by PAYING to watch it (in theatres by Sept 10). This is our best way to tell producers that audiences want to see more of this sort of film, and less of whatever it is thats out there. . Only when producers realise that there is a market for films that make us think will they finance films that make us think. This is a business, after all, and a ruthless one for the financiers. Movies must gross triple their costs just to break even -- and thats excluding corporate overhead expenses pa -- so we cant really fault producers for sticking to formula. One major flop can literally cripple them. . So if we want newer and better Philippine cinema -- however we may define newer and better -- we must help finance it. Heaven knows the government wont, FDCP notwithstanding. . By voting with our wallets, we also foreground the (heretical?) notion that thinking can be entertaining, too. And Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan is as good a start as we can get. . Dont think of it as a too-long movie, albeit brilliant and critically acclaimed. Just think of it as ridiculously short (but meaningful) vacation in the hinterlands of Ilocos. Trust me on this one. Im Ilocano, and it felt like the memory of a visit home to the farm. . Watch it.
