Those who have been Waiting for Superman should be ecstatic. He has arrived. His name, believe it or not, is Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York. The Sandinista new mayor there said he was going to shut down a number of beloved, successful charter schools. Now Cuomo and the state legislature have enacted a law that prevents the mayor from doing that. The lotteries to see which children in New York City can get a good education will now have more winning tickets. Who’da thunk it? . The better solution is to pass a constitutional amendment saying that governments shall have nothing to do with education at all other than running specialized schools for government jobs for which there are no civilian counterparts, like fighter pilots. Public schools are a Soviet method of accomplishing a very important function. Food is also important, and I recall a poll not too long ago that said the business that people most respect is supermarkets. That’s because they have lots of competition and little government involvement. It would be nice if schools were the most respected institution. And they probably would be as a group if they were all private—like our internationally respected private colleges are now.
