Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose - TopicsExpress

Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it” (Lk 9:24) In the First Reading, Zachariah prophesies an even that would take place centuries later – the piercing of the side of the Jesus. And from this wound ‘blood and water came out’. In this event we see Jesus going beyond his mandate. He gave away even the last drop of his blood, and water – a symbol of baptism – for the forgiveness of sins, our sins. That is what the Lord asks of his faithful followers: to go beyond. Beyond our normal prayer life, beyond giving our time and money, beyond our family…. To give till it hurts. We ought not to be concerned only with this earthly life, but with the eternal life that awaits us. Is it right to make distinctions when I am giving of my time and money? The answer lies in the Second reading, where St Paul clearly says: ‘All of you are one in Jesus Christ’. So let us not distinguish by class and creed, Goans and non-Goans, ‘inside and outside’. Let us give generously to whoever needs it most. Let us not our own comfort and pleasure come in the way of giving of ourselves to others. FRUIT: Have I gone beyond the call of duty, as the Lord expects me to? Is there someone he is asking me to serve right now?
