Though little known, in the early days of the Baal Shem Tovs career, he was a shochet. Eventually as the demands on his time grew with his budding chassidic movement, he found it neccisary to resign his post. Another shochet was quickly found and hired. This second shochet was a real talmud chachum and yorei shemayim. Before slaughtering any animal, he would sharpen his knife anew so as to ensure that the most halachically rigorous shechita could be performed. Before his arrival, there was much excitement in the town. But, to his surprise, on his first day of work, he heard a complaint. “I dont like you as much as the old shochet,” complained the peasant. “What do you mean? You bring me your chickens and cows and I slaughter them to the most machpid chumras of kashrus-what more do you want?” he replied “I dont want anything, its just that our last shochet, well, he used to wet his whetstone with his own tears...
