Thought#47. How to improve the chanting? tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ (CC Adi 17.31) One can chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking himself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than the tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and ready to offer all respects to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly. (Śikṣāṣṭaka 3) Below just my thoughts, you may or may not like them but i will express them anyway. What it means to be lower (or more humble) then the straw in the street. Even straw has abhiman or identification with the body of a straw. We have to completely give up the identification with the body and mind at least at the time of chanting. It practically means that we will not be thinking of anything related to the present body or mind but rather act from the platform of the soul, attentively chanting the holy names. Tree can tolerate many things but it is not capable to be grateful for what is happening to it. To be more tolerant then a tree means that we are not only are able to tolerate whatever Krishna is sending our way but we are also extremely grateful for everything what is happening to us, seeing Krishnas hand and mercy in it. To be devoid of all sense of false prestige means to understand that Im just an insignificant servant of Krishna and whatever little I can accomplish is due solely to Him using me as an instrument. Im not trying`to impress anybody by doing anything but just try to please Krishna by my every action. And to offer all respects to others means being free from envy and competitiveness, thinking that parsing somebody will take away from my glory. We need to understand that pushing others forward and keeping ourselves at the back is extremely pleasing to the Lord.
