Thought For Today Friday 05 July 2013 Genesis 23, 24; Matthew 9: 9 – 13; Psalm 106. The call of Matthew to discipleship was not merely to be a follower, but to be an intimate friend of Jesus. This is evident from the way Jesus sits at table with Matthew and his friends. Sitting at table, sharing and enjoying a fellowship meal, getting involved in a table conversation, etc., are done only among intimate friends. Both saints and sinners are friends of Jesus. All are called to enjoy his intimacy and the intimacy of the heavenly banquet. Matthew belonged to a class that was bitterly hated by the society at large. He was considered a public sinner with no part in the ordinary social life and religious practices. Jesus, by calling such a man to be his intimate friend, breaks all barriers and shuns all taboos, extends his loving mercy and healing to all. He brings Matthew back not only to societal life, but also to his true destiny. For Jesus everyone is a child of God and has the right to inherit eternal life. As we spent the day today lets love one another and treat everyone as being created in the (imago dei) image of God.
